If you are not familiar with the late Jack L Chalker’s Well World, it is an interesting concept about a super-advanced (and now gone) species that conquered all the secrets to the universe. Almost. And in trying to solve that last one, created the Well World, where 1,560 different “hexes” exist, each a different “world” with different species. When someone stumbles through a portal to the Well World, they wake up forever changed, to fit into one of those hexes.
