Everything is not perfect in the town of Wayward Pines. Theresa Burke is concerned about how her 11-year-old son Ben is being brainwashed in the repressive schools, but the crisis grows far worse when Ben is struck down by a virulent form of meningitis. As he lies in a deep coma, feverish, delirious, his mind is open to an entirely different sort of enemy. For outside the electrified fences of the last town on Earth are monstrous inhuman aberrations, and Ben’s sickness makes him vulnerable to a dangerous and terrifying link with an outcast among the aberrations. The two share a mind and body, neither understanding—with disastrous consequences.
I co-authored this with the amazing Kevin J. Anderson, author of over 120 books, more than fifty of which have been national or international bestsellers. He has written numerous novels in the Star Wars, X-Files, and Dune universes… and needless to say it was awful hard to just sit down and get to business and not to go all fan-boy on him.
This is set in the Wayward Pines universe and is part of Kindle Worlds. Basically, Kevin and I were playing in Blake Crouch‘s sandbox. His Wayward Pines books, and the upcoming Fox Television show (directed by M. Night Shyamalan) are steeped in the mystery of Wayward Pines. It was a bit of a challenge to try to write this story with idea of who knows what… Not only as far a characters are concerned, but the reader as well.
It was very helpful to have advance access to the third novel, The Last Town, and to Timothy Zahn’s Kindle Worlds prequel novella Wayward Pines: Tree of Life.
This was a wonderful opportunity and a wonderful experience. I hope you enjoy it.
